Food Choices is an eye-opening documentary following filmmaker Michal Siewierski on his three-year journey to expose the truth about our food choices how they affect us, others, and our planet.

Michael dives into exploring which foods are healthy for us and which ones lead to disease, which diets are the healthiest and most sustainable for future generations, our environment, and ourselves.

Dr. Pamala Popper, Founder of the Wellness Forum, states that just as other animals in our animal kingdom have an appropriate diet, humans do as well, a plant-based diet full of fruits, veggies, and legumes. With 27% of people dying of heart disease, 25% dying of cancer, 10% from strokes it’s hard to ignore the fact that these are all disease from “nutritional ignorance.”

If you look back in history hundreds of years ago the kings and queens were the only ones who could afford to eat meat and they were consequently the only ones who died of coronary heart disease etc. You may argue but we history shows we were hunter-gatherers pre-historically. While this is true, the documentary goes on to explain that we were mainly gatherers. Men were really the only ones partaking in the hunting while women, grandparents, and children were the gatherers collecting fruits, vegetables, berries, bugs.

You may wonder well how will I get enough protein? Michal talks to various plant-based nutritionists and experts to uncover the misconception of not getting enough protein in a plant-based diet. As is stated in the documentary “You will never have a protein deficiency in any diet that meets the sufficient amount of calories.”

The more our society consumes animal products the more cancer we get because animal protein causes an increases free radicals and estrogen levels in our bodies creating an increased risk of cancer. People who say they gave up red meat to be healthier eating chicken or turkey don’t understand that in reality these have the just same amount of cholesterol, they are animals that both high in the food chain so they are heavily polluted.

Michal then gets into the correlation of meat production and global warming. You may have heard this relationship before but not know the exact facts. The reality is meat production is directly related to “global warming, world hunger, species extinction, water scarcity, and the destruction of our forests.” The fact that 91% of all deforested land in the Amazon was destroyed for the livestock industry is terrifying. We are seeing an extinction of species faster than we have ever seen before. You may think  all this meat production should help the problem of world hunger but 70% of arable land is used to grow crops for these animals rather than feed humans.

Just the fact alone that we are adding a million people a day on earth and are predicted to reach 9 billion by 2050 should make you wonder “how we are we going to sustain a meat-eating society with 9 billion people?” A meat eating society requires 10 times as much land, energy, and water. All of this drives the fossil fuel industry- raising livestock, eating fish and producing dairy is one of the largest global warming contributors to our planet. People who think that eating grass-fed beef is better don’t realize that from a climate change perspective it’s actually not better because it’s so land intensive. Grass-fed cattle produces 40-60% more greenhouse gas emissions than a grain fed cow would producing 500% more greenhouse gases than grain-fed cattle. According to One Green Planet, a grain-fed cow requires 3 acres of land while a grass-fed cow requires 9 using 35% more water and land than a grain-fed cow.

The depletion of our ocean resources is another very large issue. 90% of the big-fish stocks have fallen to extinction since the 1950s. There is a rapid global depletion of these top predatory fish such as tuna, swordfish, marlin, and large groundfish such as cod, halibut, skates and flounder changing and unbalancing the food web drastically.

We have learned and been conditioned to resist information to let others guide how we think and make decisions. There is so much resistance and propaganda to distract you from finding out the real truth. We need to educate and inform ourselves. What we have to do is think of every choice we make with the lifecycle analysis- “what is the environmental footprint of this product I’m about to buy.” We have to wake up and realize this our life, our bodies, and our health and no one should dictate how we make our choices. The best thing we can do is to get informed and help others to become informed as well. Empower those around you to care. Read the news, read the headlines, listen to NPR, get to know what's happening around the world that YOU live in, talk to people, start a conversation, get involved in your local government, know who and what you are voting for, step outside of your day to day bubble and wake up to the fact that EVERY choice you make plays HUGE role on the thousands of lives living all over the world. You are only a speck of a person on this earth and there are 7 billion others out there.
